Helix Table

The Helix Table is a versatile piece of furniture which can operate as both a side table and stool. It features a removable top disk that can be replaced with a padded fabric seat.

This a personal project and my first endeavor into both woodworking and furniture making.

Double Helix Design

The design of the table is rooted in the idea of rotating square shapes to create circular forms. When viewed from above, the layering of wooden crosses, slightly rotated one after the other, create a near perfect circular perimeter. This design motif is further accentuated when the table revolves, creating a cascading effect.

Woodworking and Fabrication

The double helix design is composed of 23 crosses of wood, constructed with lap joints. Within the body are two cast iron flanges and an aluminum pipe to add support and help with the alignment of the crosses. At the bottom of the table is a swivel plate to allow for the body to spin, creating the cascading helix effect.
